Gameplay consists of shambling through populated areas and eating the brains of civilians, cops, militia members, and the military. The narrative setup in-game is limited, although a few cutscenes do at least point Stubbs in the right direction. Players rise from their grave in the futuristic city of Punchbowl as Stubbs, a zombie with a cool fedora and a cigarette that never loses its light. It's sometimes hard to go back to the past, and this undead adventure through the town of Punchbowl is a prime example. Still, upon playing Stubbs the Zombie in 2021, it's hard to see this effort as anything but a labor of love.
Publisher Aspyr has revived this shambling corpse from its eternal resting place, setting it for release on modern consoles and PC with as much love and care as is possible for an HD rerelease. Stubbs the Zombie in Rebel Without a Pulse is fondly remembered by a chunk of original Xbox fans as a niche hit, but the zombie actioner from developer Wideload Games did not set the world on fire when it initially released in 2005.
